It certainly has some strengths compared to other SUVs, but it pales in comparison to the benefits you get with the 2020 Chevy Equinox. Ultimately, they are both good vehicles, but the Santa Fe is edged out by the Equinox in some key areas that simply can’t be ignored, and the full comparison will go on to prove that.
If you plan to be zooming around in your new SUV, you may want to know more about the different engines that will be driving you and your family forward in the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. There are two different engines to choose from, and they are both great options. Option one, placed in the L and LS, and optional in the LT and Premier trims, is a 1.5L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine, with 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, which provides quite a zippy experience for you and your equipment that you may be lugging around town or to campsites. Alternatively, there is the 2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine, which boasts 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine can be placed in the LT or the premiere trims. Either is a good option, and both provide lots of power.
Additionally, the 1.5L engine gets 26 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined with FWD and 25 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. With the 2.0L engine, numbers only change slightly with FWD models getting 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined, and the AWD models getting 22 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG combined. With these numbers, it is clear that the Equinox is equally as efficient as it is powerful.
Switching gears to the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, there are still two choices in regards to engines. The first engine is housed in both the SE and SEL trims; it is a 2.4L Inline 4-Cylinder Engine that provides 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, whereas the second option, a 2.0L 4-Cylinder Turbo Engine, has 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, the Santa Fe may have more horsepower while losing out on torque in the starting engine, but the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox blows the competition out of the water when the engine is upgraded, even when stacked against the upgraded 2020 Santa Fe engine.
Additionally, with the standard engine, the Santa Fe gets 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined with FWD and 21 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG combined with AWD. These numbers are far smaller than those of the Equinox's base engine. Additionally, the upgraded engine does not get nearly as good fuel economy as the Equinox's. FWD models get 20 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined, and AWD models get 20 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. These numbers only further prove that while the Equinox is more powerful than the Santa Fe, it is also more efficient.
Safety can often be overlooked by drivers who are shopping around for the fastest car in town, but often SUV drivers are, understandably, more aware of safety ratings and features. Thankfully, both vehicles have many safety features that will put your mind at ease, but the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox edges out its competition in multiple vital factors that should not be ignored. Particularly, Chevrolet’s Teen Driver mode makes the Equinox a better option if you have a young driver behind the wheel.
Included in the standard version of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox are automatic emergency brakes, forward collision alerts, and a front pedestrian braking system. These features ensure that you will stop in time, even if you do not have enough time to react on your own. The Equinox’s lane-keeping assistance feature will ensure that you do not drift off the road as well, and keep drivers focused on what is in front of them.
The main feature that is great for young drivers is the Teen Driver mode, which lets you activate customizable vehicle settings associated with a key fob to encourage better driving behaviors. It can limit vehicle features and produces a vehicle report card, which gives you information on a user’s driving habits and helps for ongoing coaching of new drivers. This ensures that even when parents are not in the car, their children are still safe.
The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe has admirable safety features, many of which are similar to the Equinox, such as lane-keeping assistance. The vehicle overall is lacking many features that make the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox appealing, and many additional safety features that are often taken for granted, such as parking distance warnings in reverse, are not included in the base model.
Most notably, however, is the lack of a teen driver mode. This is often sought after for parents with young drivers behind the wheel, as it allows young drivers to feel less hassled and stressed when out on their own, but allows parents to keep an eye on their child’s driving habits. With that said, the Equinox is the better vehicle in terms of safety.
Standard interior features on the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox include numerous small benefits that add to a nice overall experience such as illuminated visors for the driver and passenger, keyless open and start, a rearview camera, and two USB ports as well as an auxiliary input jack. Having the ability to unlock and start the car without using a key is invaluable for situations when you can’t fiddle around your pockets or purses, such as during a grocery run or bringing in equipment. The rearview camera is also a great feature compared to the competitor, which only sports a proximity monitor in its standard model. Standard exterior features included with the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox consist of active aerodynamic shutters and automatic on/off headlamps.
Inside of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, you may not be as floured with the quality of life features as you may be with the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. It simply does not have the variety of features that are offered by its competitor. What it does offer is a remote keyless entry and a starting system. Besides that, the 2020 Santa Fe seems better optimized for Bluetooth calling, as it has the hands-free phone system included in all trims, but it does not offer much more beyond that on the interior compared to the 2020 Equinox.
On the exterior of the 2020 Santa Fe, you will notice the main attraction is the privacy glass in the rear and the solar-absorbing glass in the front. These are meant to provide a more private environment and reduce glare while driving. The lack of automatic features in comparison to the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox causes the Santa Fe to fall behind in the competition, though.
