Petite SUVs are the future for many small families in America. That’s why the engineers at Chevrolet have shifted their focus to developing the perfect lineup of compact and mid-size crossovers. But what are the differences among their selection? A lot of the differences appear when comparisons are made like the 2020 Chevy Blazer vs 2020 Chevy Equinox. And these comparisons are often helpful in deciding which one is best for your family, which makes them important. Knowing about the space inside the vehicles, the power they provide, the features they hold, and their outer looks all play a role in car-buying decisions and are all touched upon in these types of comparisons. So, which is better? The Blazer or the Equinox? Only a comparison will tell.
The 2020 Chevy Blazer is a mid-size SUV with available seating for five people. It offers 30.5 cu.ft. of storage space behind the back row, and you expand this cargo to a maximum of 74.2 cu.ft. by folding that second row down. On the other hand, the 2020 Chevy Equinox is a compact crossover. While it also has seating for up to five people, it has a slightly smaller cargo area. Behind the back row of seating is 29.9 cu.ft. of space, and folding the back row down will open up the maximum cargo area measured at 69.8 cu.ft. The difference is not extreme, but the Blazer does offer a bit more space. This is not the only important feature, though; the full comparison will paint a clearer picture as to which Chevy SUV better fits your needs as a driver.
One of the most important points of comparison when looking at two SUVs is the performance that each offers. The greatest SUVs have a mix of power and efficiency. And both of these Chevy SUVs offer just that. However, one is a bit stronger, while the other is a bit more efficient. Deciding which one is better depends on whether the goal is to find something powerful or something efficient.
The 2020 Chevy Blazer is available with three different powertrains. The first is equipped on the L and LT trim levels. It’s a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder motor that generates 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. It also has an average fuel economy set at 23 MPG combined (21 city/27 highway), which is quite good. The second powertrain, equipped on the 2LT and 3LT sub-trims, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder motor that pushes out 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the powertrain that is fitted under the hood of the RS and Premier trims is the 3.6-liter V6. Generating 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, it gets 21 MPG combined (19 city/26 highway). Keep in mind that all of these powertrains use a 9-speed automatic transmission and FWD. You can opt for AWD if you want. The maximum towing limit is 4,500 pounds with the V6 powertrain.
Moving on to the 2020 Chevy Equinox, this compact crossover has two powertrain options. The standard uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder motor paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and FWD. Generating 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, this powertrain gets about 28 MPG combined (26 city/31 highway). For more power, you can opt for the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and FWD. Producing 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, this powertrain also comes with a Tow/Haul mode that pushes the towing limit up to 3,500 pounds. AWD is optional on both powertrains. These engines are just shy of being as powerful as the Blazer's offerings, but fuel economy is slightly better. If you want efficiency, go with the Equinox; if you want power, pick the Blazer.
The 2020 Chevy Blazer is available in four primary trims and two sub-trims. The base L model comes with dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, keyless ignition/entry, OnStar telematics, four USB ports, and a 4G LTE Wifi hotspot. The infotainment interface is displayed on a 5-inch touchscreen, and it operates with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Next, the LT adds power-adjustable front seats, a 6-speaker sound system, satellite radio, and tinted windows. The first sub-trim is the 2LT, which includes a turbo engine and AWD system.
Then, we have the 3LT sub-trim that adds leather upholstery, heated seats, remote start technology, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and blindspot monitoring. Their third main trim is the sporty RS model. It gets a household-style power outlet, two additional USB ports, ambient cabin lighting, and a restyled instrument panel. A heated steering wheel and navigation system are also included on this trim.
The last trim is the top-of-the-line Premier model. It gets heated seating throughout the cabin as well as ventilated front seats, a wireless charging pad, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system, lane-departure warning, lane-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a surround-view parking camera system. The features and options are almost endless for this model.
Also available in four trims, you might find that the 2020 Chevy Equinox is a bit better equipped from the base level. The base model is known as the L, and it comes with the same infotainment interface but on a larger 7-inch touchscreen. Compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, OnStar, and Wifi are all included as well as the 6-speaker stereo. Added safety systems include a rearview camera, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and emergency braking. Keyless ignition/entry is also standard on the base model.
The second trim is the LS. This one comes with Teen Driver technology that provides you with a driving report card to see how well your younger driver is doing. This system also disables the stereo until the seatbelt is locked into place, and it allows you to set speed and volume limits. Next, the LT trim adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, satellite radio, heated front seats, a power liftgate, and a quick-release lever for the back seats. An added safety feature on this mid-level trim is blindspot monitoring.
Lastly, the top-of-the-line Premier trim adds leather upholstery and heated seats throughout the cabin. A wireless charging pad helps to cut down on cabin clutter, and the hands-free power liftgate makes it easier to load groceries into the back of the vehicle. Add-ons at this level include a Bose sound system and a 360-degree parking camera system. Like the Blazer, the options are quite great for the Equinox. It all comes down to what features are desired and what budget needs to be met.
Of course, one thing that everyone wants in a vehicle is something that looks good. While the exterior looks may not be the end-all decision-maker in a comparison, it is undoubtedly important to consider. Drivers do not want a vehicle that they are embarrassed to climb into in the parking lot. Instead, the exterior stylings should make drivers proud of their vehicle. And luckily, both the Chevy Blazer and Equinox have great looks that can even be customized to drivers’ liking.
The 2020 Chevy Blazer L comes with 18-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, and LED headlamps. There aren’t any significant changes until you get to the 3LT sub-trim, which features black roof rails for extra storage space and a power liftgate. At the RS trim, you will get more athletically-styled features, including a black grille, dual-exhaust tips, and larger 20-inch wheels. This trim also comes with the hands-free liftgate. Lastly, if you are looking for chrome, you should get the Premier trim - it’s dripping in chrome.
As for the 2020 Chevy Equinox, the exterior features don’t change much throughout the trim levels. Each model comes standard with LED daytime running lights, heated side mirrors, and automatic headlights. If you want a bit of privacy, the LS can get a rear privacy window with the Convenience package. The LT gets futuristic xenon headlights for optimized visibility and a power liftgate. Finally, the Premier includes full LED lighting on the outside and a hands-free liftgate. Overall, if you want something really customizable, the Blazer may be the better choice as it has more options than the Equinox does. However, that is not to say the Equinox isn't customizable - it is - there just are not as many options.
