There are two common reasons which cause a need for battery replacement. The first is simply that the battery is old, and no longer able to recharge fully. Generally speaking, a rule of thumb is a battery will last about two years, but that depends on the quality of the battery and how each driver uses it. It’s not out of the ordinary for a cheap battery to go dead in less than a year or a high quality battery to last four years. The time frame also relies on the second cause of battery failure, which will happen if lights or radio are left on without the engine running, or if for some other reason (perhaps the alarm system) the battery is allowed to fully discharge after which it won’t be able to fully recharge again.
When a battery begins to go dead, the most noticeable sign is that it won’t turn the starter motor and crank the vehicle’s engine. The car will have to be jump-started, or perhaps push started if it has a manual transmission. Other symptoms can occur as well, such as problems with power door locks and automatic doors which are used when the vehicle isn’t running, as the battery doesn’t provide enough power to operate them. Even with the engine running so the alternator is providing the electricity rather than it coming from the battery, the battery is still in line with the electric system and can cause any number of odd things to happen which don’t seem to be linked. Perhaps one or all of the power windows won’t work, different service lights might come on, or the saved radio channels can be lost.
