You’re buying a vehicle you expect to last, and you likely plan to work with it––or at least do some serious playing. Given these facts, it’s important that you get exactly the truck you need, and the array of options makes that possible. At the same time, lots of choices can make the final selection tough. First, A Little Background

We picked the Chevy Silverado 1500 for a reason. Even if you’ve never driven a truck in your life, you’ve likely heard of it. First arriving on the scene in 1999, the Chevy Silverado 1500 is a worthy heir to its predecessor, the Chevy C/K line. It may seem like it’s been around even longer because it takes its name from one of the C/K trim levels––and they’ve been around for a very long while. In fact, the name “Silverado” has been in use on Chevy trucks since 1975.

Long known for being one of the first truck models to incorporate tube hydroforming in its design––a way of shaping metals that results in easier blending of metal types, reduced weight, and greater flexibility––the Silverado continues to be a trendsetter. In the fourth generation, which began in 2019, Chevy introduced a body-blend of aluminum and steel that lightened the Silverado’s weight by up to 450 lbs, depending on the trim. Over the years since then, Chevy has added engine options, increased the availability of its top 6.2L V8 engine and 10-speed transmission, improved connectivity and towing power, added safety features, and more.

The Motherlode Silverado

The 2022 Silverado 1500 has the usual plethora of options. Overall, it’s available in nine trims––the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2––with additional choices in bed size, cab size, and drivetrain. There are also four engine options (availability depends on your trim choice), ranging from the 2.7L Turbo that comes standard in the base WT to a 6.2L EcoTec V8. MSRPs run from $33,800 for the standard WT with 2WD, regular cab, and standard bed to $67,600 for the ZR2. Are you confused? Then we’ll dig into those options in an effort to help you understand what’s really available and how to select what you need.

Cab Configurations

Let’s begin with a fairly easy question––how many people do you need to bring along? This will determine the kind of cab you choose. Typically cabs come in three forms: First is the standard cab, with no back seat and only two doors––the traditional truck cab. Second is the double cab, which has a bench seat behind the front seat and is usually accessible via two smaller doors behind the front doors, as in the Silverado. Technically a double can six if you opt for the front bench seat, though you’ll likely get objections if you try to make anyone besides kids or dogs ride in the back for more than an hour. The third option is the crew cab, which also seats up to six, but features more legroom (43.4″ in the Silverado, compared to 35.24″ in the double cab) and is accessed by regular-sized doors.

Evidently, Chevy has noticed our tendency to bring along dogs, children, helpers, or actual crew members, because only the base WT trim for the Silverado is available with a regular cab configuration. Even the double cab is only available up to the RST trim. In contrast, all trims offer a crew cab version, and the top four trims are only available with crew cabs. Fortunately, opting for a crew cab doesn’t add much to the price of a Silverado.

2WD or 4WD?

Your next choice––what sort of drivetrain you want––is simple but not always easy. It requires that you think about how you plan to use your truck and how much you want to spend––on the initial purchase, in gas, and even in repairs. Chevy trucks can come in rear-wheel drive (usually called 2WD or RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD or 4×4). These terms refer to which wheels actually turn to move the car, and each method has its strengths and weaknesses. Briefly, 2WD is usually less expensive to purchase, has better gas mileage, and often has lower repair costs. These factors all have to do with weight and drivetrain complexity––4WD vehicles, for example, are heavier and have more parts to break. The tradeoff is that while 2WD usually handle well, they cannot negotiate tough terrain as well as 4WD vehicles.

Since the Silverado 1500 is available in 2WD and 4WD, your decision here should be based a bit on what you wish to tow but mostly on where you plan to be driving. All trims (except the two Trail Boss trims and the ZR2, which are only available as 4WD) are available with either drivetrain, but if you plan to drive off-road, you’ll want to spring for 4WD. In the standard WT trim, that will amount to a difference of $4,600, so you’ll need to consider the importance of the purchase price. Your gas bill will also be a bit pricier with 4WD, though your engine choice will have a greater effect there.

And Back to Capacity…

A third important choice for any truck purchase involves the bed. How much stuff do you want to put back there? Trucks usually come in three different bed lengths, though the actual measurements can vary. Fortunately, the Silverado has best-in-class bed volume, giving you plenty of room for cargo. In the 2022 Silverado 1500, you can choose a 69.9″ short bed, a 79.4″ standard bed, or a 98.2″ long bed (all Silverado 1500 beds are 50.6″ wide at the wheel housings).

If you’re firm on your cab size, that will narrow the options a bit for you here. Again, the WT trim has the most options, but no matter what trim you choose, the regular cab is only available with a standard or long bed, and the double cab is only available with a standard bed. Conversely, the crew cabs are only available with a short or a standard bed. You will additionally be somewhat limited by the drivetrain you selected because the RST, the LTZ, and the High Country are only available with a crew cab and a short bed if you picked 2WD.

Four Not-So-Little Engines That Can

The next two decisions you’ll need to make––engine and transmission––will largely affect your ability to tow, your gas mileage, and, to some extent, where you’ll be able to go. Bigger engines result in greater towing ability and more freedom to get into (and, more importantly, back out of) difficult terrain. Usually, however, the bigger the engine, the more gas you’ll need to run it, so there’s no point in getting a bigger engine than you need.

The Silverado 1500 has four different engine options and two different transmissions (an 8-speed and a 10-speed) that are paired with them. The base trims (WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, and LT Trail Boss) are equipped with a standard 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder that can generate 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It’s powerful enough for most jobs, and it’s paired with an 8-speed transmission that gives you a Tow/Haul mode and powertrain grade braking (which helps conserve your brakes when going downhill.) The 2.7L Turbo is rated for up to 20 MPG and, with the required towing package, can haul up to 9,500 lbs.

Your second engine option is a 355 hp 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, which is paired with either the 8-speed or 10-speed transmission, depending on the trim. The 5.3L is standard in the RST, LTZ, and High Country, but it is an option on every trim. The 5.3L gas mileage can be up to 18 MPG, depending on tires and drivetrain, and generates 383 lb-ft of torque. This engine’s towing capabilities vary quite a bit depending on the options you choose, but when fully equipped, the max tow rating for this engine is 11,200 lbs.

Two other engines are possibilities for the Silverado. The first is a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-6. It’s not standard on any trim but is available on the LT, LT Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, and High Country. This engine is packaged with the 10-speed transmission and a diesel exhaust system and pulls 460 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the trailering package, this engine will pull as much as 13,300 lbs, though ratings vary a bit depending on trim.

Your last engine option is the big 6.2L EcoTec3 V8. It generates 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, is paired with the 10-speed transmission, and uses Dynamic Fuel Management tech to help keep your gas bill a bit lower (it is rated at up to 17 MPG combined). It’s only standard in one trim––the off-road ZR2––but it’s also available in both Trail Boss trims, the RST, the LTZ, and the High Country. When properly equipped, you can tow as much as 13,300 lbs with this engine. If you like power, this is the engine for you!

There are a lot of car selling options out there right now. We never imagined that there would be car vending machines out there in the world, but here we are. Raceway Chevy knows that in-person transactions are becoming less and less common, some might even say old school. We also know that some people prefer to avoid coming into dealerships when selling their cars. We get it, and if you feel that way, we’ve got you, too. If you’ve thought, “It’s time to sell my car,” there are a lot of pros and cons to consider. Let’s lay them all out on the table.

Selling to a Private Party

Most people usually start here when they are selling their cars. They think that they can get the most out of their vehicle if they sell it to their friends, family, or strangers that happen to be interested in it. So let’s start our car selling consideration.

The Pros

Initially, selling privately looks better to most people. The main reason people feel this way is that they believe they will get the most money for their vehicle. Money is a huge motivator for most of us. Because of this, most people feel like they should sell privately because they cut out dealer fees that way. There could be some truth to this; after all, dealers usually try and leave some room for a little bit of profit, and usually, when you’re selling to an individual, they’re buying because they need the vehicle to drive and not to resale later on.

On the surface level, this does make it seem like you get more money for your vehicle when selling privately. However, those other fees or taxes that come from selling to a dealer don’t add up to take very much away from you and offer you a lot of extra protection that selling privately does not. Selling privately gives you the ability to set your own terms, like when and where to meet with a potential buyer. This can also be tricky to coordinate, however, as you may not be comfortable giving someone your address, and you may feel inclined to drive and meet somewhere else anyways because of your desire to not give that information out.

So we’ve looked at why selling your vehicle to an individual is beneficial. Now we’re going to consider the downsides. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to selling to individuals meaning there are a lot of cons.

The Cons

One of the first things that someone interested in buying your car might do is ask to test drive your vehicle. This is a really concerning and stressful time when selling your car. It is always accompanied by feelings of “what if they get in an accident?” or “what if they don’t bring the car back” or maybe you’re concerned that they’re going to joy ride your car and use up all the gas, only to decide they don’t want to buy it. There are so many things to worry about, and there’s no way to guarantee that your vehicle comes back to you in the same condition it left in.

Another thing we have to be aware of is the financial situation of the buyer. Do they have a loan, or are they paying cash? Are they getting a loan through the bank to pay for it? You will have to worry about all of these things just to make sure you actually get paid for your vehicle! Then you will also have to wonder if the check will cash or if the cash is counterfeit. There is a lot of uncertainty financially. If you’re selling to a friend or family member and wreck your car, are they going to ask for the money back? Will it damage your relationship if they feel like you’ve sold them a bad vehicle? What if the buyer can’t get a loan, so they want to make payments? There is no way to guarantee they make those payments. The buyer may also try and haggle to get you to lower your price below what a fair purchase price is. Financially, selling privately is unsafe for sellers and does not offer protection against scams, failed payments, etc.

Another consideration you might have to make when privately selling your vehicle is whether or not you want to pay money out of your pocket to get a mechanical evaluation done and a VIN/Title check. This is something that many buyers will want to have on hand when they come to check out your vehicle. It doesn’t make sense to spend extra money to try and make money, so maybe you’ll decide not to do those checks. Then you might have buyers who will try and get you to lower your prices because you don’t have those checks done. Or you’ll have buyers take your vehicle to an uncertified mechanic that will make up problems to help the buyer talk you down to a lower sell price.

After all these things have been considered, you’ve spent a ton of time just trying to get someone in to even look at your vehicle, and you probably haven’t sold it yet because there have been so many complications along the way. And if you have sold your vehicle privately, now you have to ask someone else to use their time to drive you around to try and find a vehicle to buy. We all know that time is money. So now you’re paying to put gas in someone else’s tank and probably treating them to lunch to say thanks for their time. This means that any extra money you may have made by selling privately is immediately going into your hunt for a new car.

This is what we see in Chevy’s past and present, especially when you look at the newest 2022 Chevy lineup and its top competitors.

2022 Colorado vs 2022 Ford Ranger

The Colorado is Chevy’s smallest truck in the lineup, but it proves that size doesn’t drastically impact capability, at least not in a Chevy. The 2022 Colorado comes standard with a 2.5-liter engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, delivering 200 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. The available 3.6-liter engine and 8-speed automatic transmission boost this power to 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.8-liter turbodiesel transforms the Colorado into a capable road warrior by delivering 181 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque, and a best-in-class trailering capacity of 7,700 pounds.

You won’t find this level of capability on the Colorado’s biggest competitor, the Ford Ranger. Ford is revamping the Ranger for 2022, which means details are scarce. However, experts anticipate the Ranger will keep its 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with automatic start-stop technology that maximizes efficiency but limits the truck’s capability when compared to models like the Colorado. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ranger’s current 2.3-liter engine delivers 270 horsepower, which pales in comparison to the power you’ll find with the Colorado’s engine options. You’ll even find the Ranger tows less than the Chevy with a 7,500-pound maximum.

Beyond its power and capability, the 2022 Colorado also offers more options for customization with the all-new Trail Boss package that’s available on the LT and Z71 models, as well as the off-road-ready ZR2. The Trail Boss package readies the LT and Z71 trims for off-roading with a 1-inch suspension leveling kit installed from the factory, front and mid-vehicle skid plates, 17-inch wheels, red tow hooks, the elimination of the front air dam, and exclusive black bowtie emblems. The ZR2 adds a 2-inch suspension lift and a 3.5-inch wider stance along with exclusive damping technology that optimizes the Colorado’s performance on harsh terrain. These two options give drivers a better chance of designing a truck that meets all their needs.

Ford also offers off-road capability in the Ranger but doesn’t give you the options you get with the Colorado. The 2022 Ranger will likely continue to offer the Tremor Off-Road Package, which was new for 2021 and lifts the truck, adds front tow hooks, running boards, and unique details. However, this is the only real off-road package that Ford offers and is roughly equivalent to the Colorado Z71 Trail Boss. That means the Blue Oval doesn’t have an answer to the Colorado ZR2, or even just the standard Colorado Z71.

2022 Blazer vs 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

When it comes to SUVs, Chevy leads the pack with models like the 2022 Blazer. The Blazer’s recent return to the Chevy lineup was truly remarkable and is giving competitors like the Hyundai Santa Fe a run for its money in terms of power and technology. The 2022 Blazer is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo or a 3.6-liter V6 engine, both of which are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter turbo delivers 228 horsepower while the 3.6-liter churns out 308 horsepower, outshining the 2022 Sante Fe’s 2.5-liter that delivers 191 horsepower and its optional 2.5-liter Turbo with 281 horsepower.

In addition to delivering more power, the 2022 Blazer also offers more connectivity and safety technology than the Santa Fe. The Blazer comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen display that’s home to the Chevy infotainment system and optional navigation. Through the display, you’ll have access to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as well as a built-in WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa. Alexa allows you to use simple voice commands to stream your favorite music, get weather or news updates, make phone calls, respond to text messages, add items to your shopping list, and control your smart home devices.

Safety is another notable distinction between the 2022 Blazer and the 2022 Santa Fe. The Blazer now comes standard with the Chevy Safety Assist suite that includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, a Following Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam automatic headlamps, and Forward Collision Alert. In contrast, the Santa Fe limits its suite to Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane-Keeping Assist, and Lane Following Assist, many of which are only available on top-tier trims.

2022 Bolt EUV vs 2022 Nissan Leaf

Chevy’s commitment to delivering unprecedented affordability and efficiency took on new meaning with the debut of the Chevy Bolt EV in 2017 and is the inspiration behind the all-new 2022 Bolt EUV. The Bolt EUV takes everything you love about the Bolt EV and puts it on an SUV platform to deliver exceptional efficiency and capability. The Bolt EUV is truly in a league of its own and easily outshines competitors like the 2022 Nissan Leaf.

The 2022 Bolt EUV is powered by an electric motor that’s paired with a 65-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to deliver 200 horsepower and a driving range of 247 miles on a full charge. The 2022 Leaf gives you the option between two powertrains – a 40-kWh battery with a 147-horsepower electric motor or a 62-kWh battery with a 214-horsepower electric motor. However, neither matches the Bolt EUV’s range, with the Leaf averaging 149 or 226 miles, depending on the battery size. The Bolt EUV’s 247-mile range is further extended with tools like Regen on Demand and One Pedal Driving, which convert and conserve energy.

Chevy makes the 2022 Bolt EUV even sweeter with new features and tools like the Dual Level Charging Cord and Super Cruise. The Dual Level Charging Cord eliminates the need to purchase a separate charger for your home with its interchangeable plug that’s compatible with 120-volt and 240-volt outlets for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The Bolt EUV is also the first model in the Chevy lineup to offer Super Cruise, which is the first true hands-free driver assistance technology on the market. The tool allows you to take your hands off the wheel and let the Bolt EUV steer itself on compatible roads throughout North America. You won’t find anything like Super Cruise on the Leaf!

The luxurious top-of-the-line RS hovers at just under $26,000 and adds 18-inch wheels, active noise cancellation for a quieter cabin, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The optional Convenience Package adds automatic climate control, extra USB ports, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Next-Generation Safety Technology
